📜 The Rich and Global History of Coffee

The story of coffee is a dramatic epic that spans centuries, continents, and cultures. From its humble, almost mythical discovery in ancient Africa to its current status as one of the world’s most traded commodities, coffee has profoundly shaped social life, fueled industrial progress, and even triggered political controversies.

The Ethiopian Legend and Arabian Cultivation

The history of coffee begins, as most good stories do, with a legend in Ethiopia. The most widely circulated tale centers on Kaldi, an Ethiopian goat herder, around 850 AD. Kaldi noticed that his goats became unusually spirited and “danced” after eating the bright red cherries from a particular wild shrub. Intrigued, he tried the berries himself and experienced a rush of energy. He shared his discovery with local monks. Initially, the monks dismissed the cherries as the “Devil’s work” and tossed them into a fire. However, the aroma of the roasting beans was so captivating that they retrieved the embers, crushed them, and mixed them with hot water, creating the world’s first accidental brew. The drink helped them stay awake during long night prayers, cementing its early reputation as a spiritual aid.
